Medicare Plan Types

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

All-in-one alternative to Original Medicare that includes Part A, Part B, and usually Part D prescription coverage. Most plans offer additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage.

Ideal for those who want comprehensive coverage, predictable costs, and extra benefits. Plans typically have network restrictions and varying out-of-pocket maximums.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Supplemental insurance policies designed to cover costs that Original Medicare doesn't pay, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Available in standardized plans (A-N) with predictable coverage.

Perfect for those on Original Medicare who want to eliminate gaps in coverage and have more freedom to see any Medicare-approved provider.

Part D Prescription Drug Plans

Standalone prescription drug coverage designed to reduce medication costs. Required if you have Original Medicare and don't have creditable drug coverage from another source.

Available through various insurance carriers with different formularies, pharmacy networks, and cost structures to match your medication needs.

Medicare Savings Programs

State programs that help low-income Medicare beneficiaries pay Medicare premiums, deductibles, and copayments. Eligibility varies by state and income level.

Available programs include Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB), Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB), and other assistance options.

Understanding Enrollment Periods

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

The 7-month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65. This is when you first become eligible for Medicare and have guaranteed enrollment without penalties.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

The open enrollment period from October 15 to December 7 each year when you can change Medicare Advantage or Part D plans for the following year.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (AEOP)

From January 1 to March 31, Medicare Advantage members can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or Original Medicare.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)

Qualifying life events such as moving, losing other coverage, or marriage may allow enrollment outside regular periods. We help you understand if you qualify.
